You may see phrases like “fiber fast” or “fiber speeds.” But some of these companies do not run fiber optic cable all the way to your home. Knowing what these words mean can help you understand what you are buying before you sign a contract.
What “Fiber to the Home” Means
Real fiber, like Douglas Fast Net’s network, is called fiber to the home (FTTH) or fiber to the premises (FTTP). This kind of fiber runs the whole way from the network to your house. It carries information as light through thin glass strands, not electricity through metal wire. There is no copper wire or coaxial cable anywhere along the path. People sometimes call this design a passive optical network, or PON. It is a big reason fiber reaches high speeds with so few slowdowns.
What “Fiber Powered” Usually Means
Some ads use softer terms, such as “fiber powered,” “fiber fed,” or “fiber-fast speeds.” This usually means fiber is only part of the trip. Here are two common types:
- Hybrid fiber coax: Fiber optic cable runs to a cabinet or hub near your neighborhood. From there, coaxial cable (copper wire) carries the signal the rest of the way to your home. This is the same type of cable used for cable TV.
- Fixed wireless: Fiber optic cable connects to a nearby tower. From there, the signal travels through the air to a small receiver mounted on your house.
Both types can still be fast. But neither one is the same as fiber running straight to your door. That difference shows up most when the weather turns bad.
Why the Last Stretch Matters in a Storm
The last stretch is the part between the tower or cabinet and your home. This is where weather and interference tend to cause the most trouble.
Copper wire and coaxial cable are both made of metal, and metal conducts electricity. That makes them sensitive to electrical interference, especially during thunderstorms. A lightning strike near a phone or cable line can cause popping noises, static, or a dropped connection.
Fixed wireless runs into a different weather problem. Heavy rain, snow, or fog can weaken the radio signal traveling between the tower and your home. People call this effect rain fade. Wind can also shift a rooftop dish. Even a small shift can throw off its aim at the tower. That can slow down or interrupt your connection.
Fiber optic cable sends information as light, not electricity. It does not pick up the electrical interference that affects copper and coaxial cable. It also does not need a clear path through open air. Storms are not a factor the way they are for a wireless signal. That makes true fiber the most weather-resistant of the common connection types.
How to Spot the Difference in an Ad
A few habits can help you read past the marketing:
- Watch for words paired next to fiber, like “powered,” “fed,” or “optic technology.” These are not the same as a plain statement that fiber reaches your home.
- Ask the provider directly if fiber optic cable runs all the way to your house. Ask if it switches to coaxial cable, copper wire, or a wireless signal at some point.
- Ask what happens to your connection during storms or heavy rain, and how often service goes out in bad weather.
