- Residential Max ($130/month): Highest available speeds, non-deprioritized data
Those speed tiers carry a caveat where “up to” speeds are the ceiling, not the floor. Real-world performance depends on your location, how many users are sharing the satellite cell above you, and what plan tier you are on. On the two lower-tier plans, Starlink’s data is described as unlimited, deprioritized. That means during busy periods, when the satellite cell serving your area is congested, your speeds drop. This is structurally the same shared-network problem that frustrated customers on older cable and DSL systems, arriving from a different direction.
The Max plan avoids deprioritization but costs $130 a month, plus the upfront equipment purchase. That is a meaningful number, especially when you factor in that DFN customers get the speeds listed on their plan, all the time, with no data limits or deprioritization. What you pay for is what you get, all the time.
Starlink has been adjusting its pricing structure frequently, and in some areas is currently waiving the upfront hardware cost for new customers. That may sound like the gap between fiber and satellite just got smaller…without reading the fine print. In most cases, a “free hardware” offer comes in exchange for a 12-month service contract, and availability depends entirely on your address and whether Starlink’s satellite capacity in your area is congested. Some regions carry an additional demand surcharge on top of the monthly rate. Starlink’s pricing has changed multiple times in the past year alone. The monthly bill you see today may not be the one you are paying in six months.
The Starlink Experience Worth Knowing About
Starlink’s advertising tends to focus on speed and availability. A few of the day-to-day realities get less attention.
Installation is fully on the customer. Starlink ships the dish, and you mount, align, and troubleshoot it yourself. The Starlink app includes an obstruction checker, but trees, rooflines, and neighboring structures can all block the signal. Some customers discover obstruction problems after purchase, once the dish is up and connected.
If you need help with installation, Starlink charges $99 and sends a third-party contractor for a “standard” installation. If it’s considered non-standard, additional costs may apply, and those costs aren’t immediately disclosed. The contractor may have no connection to your community, no ongoing relationship with you as a customer, and no stake in whether the installation holds up six months later.
Weather affects service. This is not limited to major storms. Snow accumulates on the dish and must be cleared. The dish does have a built-in heater, but it draws noticeable power while running. In heavy rain or dense cloud cover, service can degrade or drop. Oregon winters test this regularly.
Peak-hour slowdowns are built into most plans. As noted above, the two lower-tier residential plans explicitly include deprioritization. If you are on those plans during a busy evening, your speeds may not reflect the price you’re paying on the plan description.
Latency runs higher than fiber. Starlink’s published FCC disclosures list typical latency at 30 to 40 milliseconds for continental U.S. residential service. That is functional for most everyday use, but it is noticeably higher for activities that rely on real-time response, including video calls, gaming, and security monitoring. For comparison, DFN’s measured latency on fiber is 21ms.
Support is online only. If something goes wrong with the hardware, there are no local technicians to call. Troubleshooting happens through Starlink’s app or online support, and hardware issues typically mean shipping a replacement.
